What is White Gold?

White gold is simply a gold alloy. It's gold mixed with other metals to produce that particular white colour. This does NOT mean it's inferior in quality to yellow gold, as the yellow gold used in jewellery is also an alloy - both white and yellow gold of a particular carat have exactly the same proportion of actual gold in the alloy.

One thing to bear in mind is that one 18 carat white gold alloy may not be the same as another 18 carat alloy. Of course the amount of gold in it is the same, but the other metals the gold is mixed with can vary according to the exact colouring of the white gold, and these metals vary in price, and also possibly in safety - for example nickel was widely used as an affordable alloying element which produced a nice shiny alloy - however it has been linked to dermatitis through allergic reactions with the skin.

You can read more about the different types of alloy in our guide to white gold, and also read about being sure about the quality of your white gold alloy in our why buy british? article.
